The Atheism Tapes is a BBC TV series, made by Jonathon Miller in 2003. It consists of a series of extended interviews with various people about their opinions on Religion, Atheism and their convictions on the subject.
The series was made from material which was originally filmed for the making of another series, Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief. As Miller explains in the introduction to the first program, these conversations were too interesting to remain on the cutting room floor, and the BBC agreed to make The Atheism Tapes in an effort to use this valuable and fascinating material.
Sadly, although The Atheism Tapes does have a page or two on the BBC website, there are no published transcripts, and to date the corporation have not seen fit to release the programs on DVD. This should not really be surprising - this sort of highly academic and non-glitzy series is unlikely to result in high DVD sales. Indeed, in what I suspect to be a dig at recent trends on BBC documentary making, in Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief Miller makes a highly amusing comment along the lines that there will be no fancy computer graphics, and that the series is in no way going to be, "Walking with Atheists". Those of us who lament the recent proliferation of sparse content drama-documentaries, this jibe will be a bitterly amusing one.
The author of this website transcribed the text of the series in an effort to make the material more accessible to anyone who might be interested in it, whatever their personal convictions.
Enjoy, ---DW.
